Welcome to the CRUSH ZONE

📍 Camrose, Alberta

Everyone knows there’s nothing more Canadian than hockey. But the years of pandemic isolation have made it challenging for communities to cheer on their favourite local teams and to participate in this important Canadian pastime.

Today, hockey teams across the province are slowly starting to see their fan base return. And for folks in the Camrose area, the development of a new senior AA team has grown that spirit back with a vengeance, winning championships, breaking attendance records, and engaging the community on a whole new level.

Owned by Colin Grindle and legendary country singer/songwriter Gord Bamford, the Camrose Crush have become Alberta’s newest opportunity to come together for the love of the game.

The Camrose Crush

Colin Grindle, corporate executive and Camrosian had a dream of bringing high-level hockey to his hometown. So when he heard about an opportunity to purchase a franchise from Daysland, he immediately saw its potential, moved it to Camrose and rebranded it to make his vision a reality.

“Camrose has other great teams like the Kodiaks and the Vikings,” Colin says. “But the Crush is a different brand of hockey. Some of these guys are former NHL players who just want to play the game. We’re out there for those blue-collar, fans who want to see fast-paced, exciting hockey in their hometown.”

Colin was the team’s sole owner for a while. But all it took to convince country star Gord Bamford to buy-in was to come to a game. After feeling the energy one night at the Max McLean arena, he was hooked.

There may be nothing more Canadian than hockey, but there's nothing more Albertan than hockey and country music.

Since then, the duo have elevated the Camrose Crush to incredible success, winning first place in the 2021-2022 North Central Hockey League (NCHL) championship, offering concerts before and after games, and filling the seats of the arena.

As they’ve grown, the team has been listening to their fans about what they want to see. So Colin and Gord decided to build the Crush Zone, a lounge area with a concession and bar.

Colin and Gord asked local vendors to support the build, and Sheldon Nichols was thrilled to accept. Nichols Electric provided pro-bono electrical work to get the Crush Zone up and running. Now, fans can enjoy food and beverages before, during and after the games, all while offsetting the cost of running the team.

“Sheldon and his team were such a pleasure to work with,” says Colin. “We’re very impressed with what they’ve done and would recommend them to anyone looking for professional, quality electrical work.”

It’s safe to say that the Camrose Crush will continue setting the city ablaze with excitement. But Colin and Gord have big plans to engage and give back to the community too. From philanthropic initiatives that benefit young hockey players to charitable events that engage local musicians, the future of the Camrose Crush is bright.
