Talk of the Trade: Branden Kontek

Aug 02, 2022

"It’s a rewarding feeling to stand back at the end of a project, big or small, and see what we are capable of creating with our own hands."

Last spring, Branden told us a bit about himself and his journey to becoming an electrician. We learned that he enjoys the outdoors, fishing, camping, and spending time with his dog in the central Alberta countryside. We also learned that once Branden started as an apprentice with Nichols Electric years ago, he knew he’d found his calling and his crew.

Much of this remains the same for Branden six months later, (including his favourite local watering hole!) but he’s also had a big year professionally and personally.

Read on to find out more about Branden, what he loves about his work as an electrician, and what he's looking forward to about the future!

Since our last Q&A, have you experienced any professional growth or met any milestones?

I’m proud to say that I’ve met two big milestones since our last Q&A. I purchased my first home last winter, right before going back for my final year of electrical schooling. Then in March, I took the Red Seal exam and received a high grade. So I’m now a certified Electrician Journeyman! It feels really good to meet both of these milestones so close together — and both at the age of 22.

What’s one of your favourite projects the Nichols Electric team has worked on? What makes it stand out for you?

My favourite project still has to be the Crop Management Network site expansion in Mayerthorpe. I had a lot of fun getting out of town with the team, and learned a few new skills that complemented my apprenticeship.

What do you enjoy most about being an electrician?

It’s a rewarding feeling to stand back at the end of a project, big or small, and see what we are capable of creating with our own hands. I’m also looking forward to seeing how the renewable energy sector progresses over the next few years. There’s been a push to move away from non-renewable sources of energy, so it’ll be exciting to see what that looks like.

Are there any local Camrose businesses, organizations or events that you’d like to give a shoutout too? What do they bring to the community?

The Steampunk Lounge at the Alice Hotel. They have fantastic food, good-sized portions and an enjoyable environment where I can visit with family and friends.

How will you be spending your time outside of work this summer?

I plan to do a little bit of camping and fishing this summer, as well as a bit of exterior work on my new house. Summer is so short, so I want to make the most of nice weather while it’s here!
